Health Tips
In the last newsletter I discussed the importance and significance of breathing in a way that does
not stress the physiology. In many fields the link between our breathing and our mental state has
been well established.
Here is a simple yoga type breathing exercise which can be carried out at any ti me you wish to be
more relaxed. The whole exercise is done without any control of breath volume , nor any
holding of the breath . Just use normal ‘ev ery - day’ breaths during the process.

Please use your common sense and not do this whilst driving using machinery etc.
- my disclaimer!

1. Place your forefinger over the bridge of your nose, and have both your thumb and middle
finger next to each nostril.
2. Start by covering one nostril and breathing in through the other side. Just take a normal
size breath and do not take a deep breath.
3. As you breathe in have your awareness on the air gently coming in through your nostril.
4. When you have breathed in comfo rtably, cover this nostril and breathe out through the
other one.
5. At the comfortable end point of your out breath, cover this nostril and breathe in through the
other.
6. Keep repeating this sequence of breathing in through one nostril and out through the ot her,
in through the same nostril and out through the other. Continue for about 5 - 10 minutes.
You will find that you naturally become calmer and more relaxed during this process. Doing this
before bed helps to give an improved quality of sleep.

Sinus Problems
Do you or your child suffer from regular nasal or sinus congestion? Sinus pain can be quite
distressing and can even lead to headache and head pain.
What are the sinuse s?
The main head sinuses are naturally occurring air filled cavities in the bones of the head and are
located:
- In the cheeks (maxillary sinuses)
- Behind the eyebrows (frontal sinuses)
- Close to the back of the eye sockets (sphenoid sinus)
- Behind the bridge of the nose (ethmoid sinuses)
The sinuses are air - filled spaces in your skull behind the bones of your face
and forehead that open up into the nasal cavity. They are lined with the same
membrane as your nose. This is called the mucous membrane and it
pro duces a slimy secretion (mucus) to keep the nasal passageways
moist and to trap dirt particles.

If the mucous membrane gets infected it becomes inflamed and thus swollen and painful. Chronic
inflammation can have a detrimental of the membrane itself and le ad it more prone to further infection. The standard medical treatment is antibiotics.
From the perspective of cranial osteopathy, each of the sinuses in health is stimulated to drain by the naturally occurring movement of the cranial bones. If the motion o f the bones in the cranium are reduced e.g. falls, direct blows to the face or even birth trauma (common cause in children and adults) then drainage is hindered and infection is more likely. Restoration of normal cranial bone movement often helps both acut e and chronic sinus congestion/ sinusitis.

A self help approach is to put a few drops of olive oil onto a cup of hot water. Then add one drop of eucalyptus oil onto the olive oil which will be floating on the water. Keep the cup in your bedroom as you sleep.

N.B. Do not drink the mixture in the cup!
Use just one drop of eucalyptus oil as the essential oils are very concentrated.
Do not apply the essential oil direct ly on to the skin.
The hot water will cause the oil to vaporise and help to decongest t he sinuses.
If you know anyone who has sinus problems and they would like to discuss this further, I can be
contacted on 015394 33220.

Coaching

Recently someone came to see me for a coaching session. They wanted greater clarity in their business so that they could cope with its rapid growth. When an aspect of your life is changing rapidly, faster than your ability to keep pace, stress is always one of the consequences. Another obvious consequence is that the success of the action taken starts to reduce in relation to the increasing stress levels. They could see that their actions compared to their
previous high level of achievement, were becoming more muddily.

Some principles behind coaching:
The first step of the session was to establish what their goals were, for themselves and their business. (On previous newsletters I have discussed the importance of goal setting – see newsletter section of our website http://www.peakperf/ ormanceforyou.co.uk ).
This step helps to establish clarity for the client and focuses their attention on the outcome not the difficulty.

Next was to discover what aspects of the growing business demands were difficult for the client and what factors c aused the ‘mental blocks’. With coaching it is important for the coach to discover the ‘triggers’ which set off the negative trend and hold the client back from achieving their goal. – This is one of the aspects which makes the practitioner ‘earn his keep’ .

Next is to detect how the ‘triggers’ distort clarity and take the client away from their chosen path. Having detected the triggers and their action, change is created so that the triggering effect is removed using a wide variety of NLP (Neuro - Linguisti c Psychology) techniques. These vary
from using highly specialised visualisation methods and mental mapping to Ericksonian hypnosis techniques. (The techniques involved would be explained and discussed with the client in advance).

At the next 3 sessions I taught specific methods which I call ‘Creative Dynamics’ (see business coaching pages of our website). These are methods I have developed based on principles of cranial osteopathy and are powerful techniques for expanding the awareness of the client. This approach proactively ensures that the client can stay ahead of their business growth, keeping
clarity of thought and reducing stress at the same time.

(Some of these Creative Dynamic techniques are taught as part of our self development
seminars – see top of newsletter).
